Poulsbo, WA

Little Norway's mix of century-old downtown lines and fast-draining bay-side outwash means leaks hide well and fail suddenly.

Black poly water line laid in a trench along a hedge with a cone marking the end

Poulsbo has a historic core around Front Street and Liberty Bay where the homes date back to the early 1900s, and a wide ring of newer neighborhoods climbing Finn Hill, Viking Way and Noll Road. The old core has old service lines, some of them galvanized steel that has outlived every reasonable expectation. The newer ring has polyethylene and PEX that should last decades but gets damaged by settling, roots and the occasional errant fence post. We see both every month.

The ground around the bay is sandy glacial outwash. It digs like a dream, but it also drains so well that a leaking service line can lose thousands of gallons a month with no wet spot anywhere. Poulsbo homeowners usually find out from the City of Poulsbo water bill. Up the hill the soil changes to dense till with a hardpan layer a foot or two down, and there a leak will eventually push water to the surface, often fifty feet downhill of the actual break.

Our approach is the same in both: locate acoustically from the meter to the house, pinpoint the break, then dig only where it is. On a tight Front Street lot that might mean a careful hand-dug pit next to a historic foundation. Out on Big Valley Road it might mean the mini excavator and a few hundred feet of new HDPE pulled in one piece. We do all of it with our own crew and our own equipment, and we put your yard back when we're done.

North Kitsap is a long way from a lot of plumbing companies. It is not a long way from us. Call (206) 354-9906, any time, and we'll get a technician headed up Highway 3.

Leak detection in Poulsbo

Along Liberty Bay and Front Street the outwash sand hides leaks completely; the City bill is the only sign. Up Finn Hill and Viking Way the hardpan surfaces water downhill of the break. Poulsbo's older core also has shared and easement lines from the early 1900s that have to be traced before they can be listened to.

Water line repair and replacement in Poulsbo

In the Front Street core we hand dig next to century-old foundations and transition galvanized or early copper to PEX. In the Viking Avenue and Noll Road neighborhoods we replace cracked poly and polybutylene. Out Big Valley Road it's long HDPE pulls to acreage homes on wells or PUD meters.

Exterior drains in Poulsbo

Poulsbo's hillside neighborhoods send a lot of runoff toward the bay, across the lower lots on the way. Interceptor drains across a slope and properly outleted footing drains solve most of it. The flat lots near the bay sit close to the winter water table and need drains with gravity outlets, not dry wells.

Excavation in Poulsbo

The bay-side outwash digs easily and sloughs; the hillside till digs slowly and holds. Poulsbo's in-town lots have tight access and historic landscaping we take care with, and the acreage out north is open machine work.
