Port Townsend, WA

A Victorian seaport where 1890s service lines sit under historic sidewalks and the gravity pipeline from the Quilcene delivers the water.

Port Townsend is across the Hood Canal Bridge in Jefferson County, and it is the one place we serve where a service line might be older than anyone's grandparents. The Victorian seaport's Uptown and Downtown historic districts were built in the 1880s and 90s, and while most of the water service lines have been replaced at some point in the last century, plenty of homes still have galvanized steel from the 1920s through the 1950s under sidewalks and gardens that have been rebuilt many times. Finding the line is half the job. Finding the leak on it is the other half.

Water comes from the Big Quilcene and Little Quilcene rivers through the City's Olympic Gravity Water System pipeline, and the City's meters are in boxes at the sidewalk or street edge. The private line from the meter to the house is yours, and that's what we locate on. We trace the line with locating equipment, pinpoint the leak acoustically and with a correlator, and open the ground where the break is. In the historic districts that often means a careful hand-dug pit next to a brick foundation and a repair that leaves the garden looking like we were never there.

The mid-century neighborhoods around Hastings Avenue and Sheridan Street, and the larger parcels toward Cape George and Discovery Bay, are more conventional: copper and polyethylene lines on sandy outwash that drains well and hides leaks, with the occasional clay seam that holds water and surfaces it far from the break. For those we bring the mini excavator and, where a line has failed more than once, we'll recommend a continuous HDPE replacement.

Port Townsend is a dedicated trip for us and we schedule it so you aren't waiting days. Call 360 Leak Finders at (206) 354-9906 and we'll get you on the calendar, or dispatched right away if it's an emergency.

Leak detection in Port Townsend

In Port Townsend's Uptown and Downtown historic districts the service line may be a century old and its route unknown, so tracing comes first. The sandy outwash under much of the city hides leaks completely; the City bill is the sign. On the Cape George and Discovery Bay parcels the runs are long and the correlator narrows them.

Water line repair and replacement in Port Townsend

Hand-dug transitions from 1920s to 50s galvanized to PEX next to brick and stone foundations in the historic districts, with the garden left as we found it. Conventional copper and poly repairs in the Hastings and Sheridan neighborhoods, and HDPE replacements on the acreage.

Exterior drains in Port Townsend

Sandy bluffs above the Strait and the Bay, clay seams in the uplands, and Victorian-era foundations that never had footing drains. Downspout lines on the historic homes often end at the foundation. Footing drain installation and properly outleted downspout lines are the common work.
